Your Time Has Come

When Little Dude was, well, littler, he loooved him some Elmo. Actually in our house, the little red monster was referred to as "Elbow". Little Dude had clothes, toys, movies... all kinds of Elbow stuff!

Tickle Me Elmo was the first to join our family. I searched high and low for that thing and finally, 2 days before Christmas, found him. Shortly after, Tickle's friend who did the chicken dance was invited in. At some point we also added Hokie Pokie to the brood. And finally, the best was saved for last... Tickle Me Elmo Extreme. Extreme was by far my favorite. I have never laughed so hard watching that Elmo laugh. Just awesome!

So now Little Dude is 4. Sadly he is growing up. Elmo has been replaced with Bob the Builder, Little Bear, and Yo Gabba shoot me now Gabba.

The Elmos had made their home in the back corner of the living room. This is the corner of the room where the kids have their soft chairs and big stuffed animals. It's their comfy spot where they can wrestle without getting hurt . I took the Elmos out of their comfy home and moved them to the other room until I find a new home for them such as the garbage because they are annoying as hell .

I explained to the kids that they were too big for Elmo. Maybe we can put them up and try and sell them in the fall when the resale event returns. Or maybe we can donate them to Goodwill for other kids to play with who don't have a lot of stuff. Little Dude is ok with this explanation.

About an hour after I moved the Elmos to their temporary home in the dining room I realized that this is the explanation I should have given the kids...

Holy crap!
We need to get these horny red monsters out of this house!

Elmo, get your feathered paws off!
There will be no hokie pokie-ing by you in this house!

Elmo

If you don't back up off each other
and get out of my house

I will get the tape!

Bad Elmo

Hip Hop Help

I've seen this basket floating around the blogosphere quite a bit lately. Amy from Keeping up with the Schultz Family and Charlene from adventures-in-mommy-land have both graciously given it to me. No, it's not award. It is so much better than that!

Here is some information on the Hershey's Better Basket Blog Hop:

"This Easter season Hershey is all about helping you to create Better Easter Baskets with their special limited edition Easter candies found at Walmart.

More importantly, Hershey wants to promote the idea of going good in our own communities. The Hershey Company is committed to making a difference in the communities where we live in, and has a heritage of giving back to the community."

Thanks to Hershey's and 20 different bloggers looking to blog for a good cause, baskets like the one above were created and given to charities of each bloggers choice to spread Hershey's ongoing message around: We are ALL working together to do good in and out of our own communities!

In addition to those 20 baskets donated to charity, Hershey's is also sponsoring a Better Basket Blog Hop where Hershey will donate $10 per blog post entry for the Children's Miracle Network, up to $5,000.

How fantastic is that?

If you want to be apart of the blog hop, here are the rules:

Copy and paste these rules to your blog post.

Create a blog post giving a virtual Easter Basket to another blogger – you can give as many
Virtual Baskets as you want.

Link back to person who gave you an Easter Basket.

Let each person you are giving a Virtual Easter Basket know you have given them a Basket.

Leave your link at BetterBasket.info/BlogHop comment section. You can also find the official rules of this #betterbasket blog hop, and more information about Better Basket with Hershey’s there.

Hershey’s is donating $10 per each blog participating to the Better Basket Blog Hop to Children’s Miracle Network (up to total of $5,000 by blog posts written by April 4th, 2010).

Please note that only one blog post by each blog url will count towards the donation.

I would love to give this basket to...

SupahMommy
Jane
Kmama
Shell
Princess

And anyone else who would love to help is more than welcome to also take this basket and spread it around.

My Mom Lied to Me

Can't hear you

I was reading the latest post by Anything Fits a Naked Man yesterday

isn't that just the greatest blog name ever!!!

Anyway, she was talking about how Billy Joel's "She's Got a Way" is her favorite song. I absolutely love this song - it brings tears to my eyes every. single. time! But her post reminded me of how my mom lied to me as a child. You see, I had this tape. Did I just date myself? While I'm at in, I might as well throw it out there that I was around 4 at the time. That probably doesn't help either, huh?. But anyways, this was a tape of Billy Joel songs. I listened to this tape religiously. I would get so excited when one of the songs from the tape came on in the car because I knew all the words and could sing along. Never once did it occur to me that the voice on the radio singing my favorite songs was not exactly like the voice singing the same songs on the tape. My uncle tried to tell me the tape was another guying singing Billy's songs, but my mom said my uncle was wrong. Naturally, I believed my mom.

Shame on her!

But secretly, part of me still believes that really was Billy himself singing to me.

Back Off!
That Chair is Mine!

I am so glad that it's Spring. Now if only Mother Nature would realize this. We had a few beautiful days the past week or so, but today I almost busted out my winter coat. I say almost because I'm stubborn like that. And the only reason GG wore her winter coat is because she had an ice skating party today. Little Dude joined me in not wearing his coat, but only because I have no idea where it is. I think I actually hung it up for the season. Not sure.

Anyway, Spring in here. I've been noticing that the grass looks greener. There are buds on the trees, and flowers are starting to pop up. But for me, the best part of Spring is that Summer follows. I realize I may be jumping the gun a bit talking about Summer, but I absolutely LOVE Summer. I can't wait to wear shorts and go to the pool. And I can pull out my flip flops. Oh, wait, I already did that. I did mention that I'm stubborn like that, right? I may or may not be the lady outside the school wearing flip-flops and a jacket that's zipped.

Another thing I like about Spring are the warm nights. Hopefully they come soon. I love taking the kids to the park or going for a walk to the coffee shop on those nice nights. After it's dark and the kids are in bed, I finally get to enjoy my favorite part of my house - the living room chair. Now, I only like this chair for about half of the year. You see, our house is too small for us. So when we're already cooped up in the house due to the weather, extra things make me somewhat claustrophobic. That half of the year I complain about the chair and try to talk Chris into getting rid of it. But he's not always the best at throwing away things. Especially things that we got from his parents. But once the weather changes for the better, I begin my love affair with the chair.

Coats are no longer piled on it and I can finally sit in it. On those warm nights when there's a nice breeze, I open the window behind it. I can sit in my chair and watch tv, read a book, or work on 1 crochet project or another. I've learned that I can never do just one project. I think I may be a tad ADD when it comes to crochet, but it makes me happy so I deal with it.

My only problem now is trying to figure out how to keep this little bum out of my chair before the nice weather decides to finally stay.

What is your favorite part of your house?

I Don't Understand How the World Works

I posted this a few days ago. I
It was one of the hardest things I have ever written.
My heart broke as I typed
I am reposting it as a part of

Please take a moment to think about these kids
and hug your own babies everyday!

For a while now, I've been following Jaden's story. In case you don't know, Jaden is a 2 year old boy fighting cancer. I first came across his story on Facebook through friends of mine. That lead me to SupahMommy's blog, where she gives updates every Sunday. I was fortunate enough a few months ago to go to a fundraiser for Jaden. It was amazing to see the love that surrounds this little boy and his family. It was also amazing to watch him run around and socialize just any other 2 year old.

While reading Jaden's updates and how he was slowly starting to win his battle, a friend of mine was losing her battle with cancer. In January, she lost her battle. It was so hard to lose a friend and it was even harder to watch her little girls go through the loss of their mother. In some strange way, I did find peace in her loss. A part of me felt that the overall plan was for her to give her life so Jaden could keep his. It is completely unfair because she had so much going for her, but at the same time, Jaden is only 2 and has yet to live a full life.

I was at peace with this until today. Jaden has a buddy Ethan. Ethan is also 2 and has the same cancer as Jaden, but unfortunately his treatments are not working. His tumor has grown and I don't think there's anything else that can be done for him. My heart breaks for Ethan and his family. I can't even imagine what they are going through. It has to be unbearable. I hope that they can find some way to deal with all of this and make their baby comfortable.

I've also seen stories of children on others' blogs. Some stories are about winning the battle, while others are not. I just don't understand why this stuff has to happen. Whether you're grown or a baby, why is the challenge of fighting something so ugly shoved in your face. I wish I knew the reason and I wish I had a cure, but sadly, I do not. Someday someone will, but for now all we can do is hope and pray. Hope for the road to recovery or hope for comfort.

For ways to help Jaden, Ethan, and their families, please go to SupahMommy's blog.

If you come across other stories such as these, please try to help in any way you can. It doesn't have to be money. Quite often hope and prayer help more than you realize.

Seeing Red

The past few days were really long and stressful. I was already long overdue for some pampering and those days just reinforced that need.

Last night I went over to my friend T's house. We've been friends since we were 7 years old and we're thick as thieves. It feels so great when we get together, whether it's going out of just hanging out at one of our houses.

The reason for getting together last night was so I could make this announcement...

I am once again a red-head!

Red

T and I have decided that we need to discuss before purchasing in the future. The last 2 times we've done our hair we have picked the exact same color. Last time it even went as far as choosing the same brand. I guess great minds think alike!

Last night, not only was our hairs transformed, but we were transformed into little girls giggling over the stupidest things. Honestly, we can get like that on your average night, but last night was especially bad. You see, the brand I bought was called Perfect 10. Now if you have ever dyed your hair yourself, then you know that, on average, it takes about 20 minutes for the goo on your head to magically transform your hair. This particular brand only takes 10 minutes, hence the name. I really didn't think it through too much beforehand, but I realized it meant that the stuff was twice as potent. Hair dye usually doesn't smell all that great, but this stuff... good gravy! I thought I was going to pass out! And the goofiness after consuming those fumes - you would have thought we were high back in grade school!

But in the end, I love my new hair.

Chris has informed me he loves it as well, but he's also explained that he's afraid to ask me any questions. We all know how fiery red-heads can be!

Moving on, I would like to share a story about my son, Little Dude. If you've been here before than you might have seen somewhere along the way that I am homeschooling him for preschool. At the time when my husband and I were discussing preschool, I did not have a car during the day. That made preschool selections VERY slim. We figured that since I have a background in education, it would just make sense to do it at home. Plus it saves us a lot of money.

Little Dude and I spend some time each day learning different things. I also take him to WeeSchool Wednesday storytime at our library every week. Each week the kids learn about a different letter. They sing songs, listen to stories, and then do a craft that is related to the letter. This week the letter was "T" and the kids made turtles.

Turtleisn't the shirt just awesome :)

I do believe the body is the bottom of a styrofoam bowl. There is a slit cut into either side of the body and the kids, with a parent's help, slide a plastic spoon through the slits. This becomes the head and the tail. The legs are taped to the inside of the bowl and the kids then painted their turtles. The eyes are 2 plastic beads, which were attached by the parents with a hot glue gun.

Unfortunately the paint is not staying on the turtle, but Little Dude loves his animal regardless.

I love the library projects - they are always so creative. It also gives the kids something concrete to take home. When we pick GG up from school or my husband up from work, Little Dude tells them all about the craft he made that Wednesday and what letter is was for.

If you have time to do the prep work beforehand, this is definitely something I would recommend doing with your kids. So easy and so cute!

Thanks for stopping by!

Buggy Boo

As many of you know

This week's challenge is to find a bug and hold it for 5 seconds.

I would like to take a moment here to point out that it is March.
In Pittsburgh.
In other words... NOT BUG SEASON!

Usually that's a good thing, just not this past week. I would also like to point out that I do not like bugs. I can handle worms, potato bugs, or an ant. Yes, AN ant. More than one just gives me the heebee jeebees, but I'll save that story for another time.

Anyway, Little Dude and I dug. And dug. And dug. Finally we found a bug, i held it, I recorded it, and I called it a day. There are no special effects in my video for 2 reasons:

1. I have no desire to watch the video again

2. My glasses broke. I'm lucky I made it this far into a post. Just picture me as that nerdy kid in high school with the tape on the glasses. Do I get anything for having a handicap?

So anyways, here's my video. While you're watching, see if you can catch Little Dude running away. He hates touching bugs more than me. I didn't think that was possible!

If you're brave enough
you can head over to Supah's Survivor blog
to watch more creepy buggy flicks

Luck

Luck can be finding 5 dollars in the back pocket
of a pair of old jeans

Luck can be finding a four leaf clover
in a field of green

Luck can be sitting in your yard at just the right moment

as the girl down the street rides by on her bike

Luck can be that right moment turning into

the closest friendship
One that lasts a lifetime

Luck can be the result of the alphabet
That leads 2 people to form a bond
The type of bond that lasts for eternity

The meeting of soul mates

Chris and I have been together for 14 years. We hung out together during our time on the stage crew. And due to the luck of the alphabet, he would often sit behind me in the classes we had together. Of course he would also "rest" his feet on the back of my chair. And by rest I mean bounce his leg ridiculously fast and driving me absolutely crazy. But I guess that's what boys do when they like a girl.

October of 2001, when I was 8 months pregnant, we decided to get married. Those first few years were rough. I was staying home with the baby and loving every minute of it. But the result of that was him working late nights and many weekends, too. Even with him working such long hours, we were still financially strapped. At that time we didn't have a car either. That made it especially hard for me because I couldn't go anywhere unless I wanted to walk. But remember, I had the baby, which makes any trip twice as hard.

As time went on, I returned to the work force and Chris found a new and better job. But that doesn't mean things were all roses. We still had our rough patches, either as individuals or as a couple. I'm not ready to attack those demons "out loud" on my blog, but as a couple we have worked through the bulk of it. And I do believe working together has made us stronger.

I consider myself very lucky to have someone that I can turn to when I need help. And he can turn to me as well. I am very lucky that we have a bond of trust that cannot be broken, love that will not fade, and humor that will never get old.

I always say that if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. But in reality, that is not the case. I believe it was luck, or fate, if you want to call it that, that brought us together. Plus some assistance of a mutual friend who convinced him to ask me to our Sophomore Semi-formal dance. But I still believe that luck was a huge part of us coming together.

The colors of the Rainbow

I often wonder how many people in my neighborhood really understand, let alone care, what multi-culturalism is. I may not love the house we are in right now. Ok, I am pretty close to hating it, but I do love our neighborhood. Our little town is a square mile - not big at all. Even though it's small, we have 2 elementary schools. But the nice thing about having the 2 elementary schools is that the class sizes are small. At least for my daughter's school, the average class size is around 16 kids. It's easier for a teacher to give a child more one-on-one time. As a parent it's also easy to get acquainted with other parents. We may not always be in the same cliques, but for the most part we all get along. Another thing about where I live is that everything is within walking distance. I really enjoy that when it's not winter. We can walk to the park, the pool, the library, the grocery store... everywhere! And there are sidewalks so we're not walking in the street.

Now back to my point...

With there being fewer kids in our district compared to those surrounding us, you also notice the kids more. There are not a lot of kids from other ethnicities in our district. To be quite frank, I know of a lot of close-minded people around here, and it's not like that's a well guarded secret or anything. I sometimes think that if you're not white, this is not the first place you would look for a house. I, for one, was raised to see others for who they are instead of what they look like. I always say that I don't care if your skin is purple and you have one eye. If we get along, great! I also try to raise my kids to think this way. GG also learned to see others for who they are back in the day care days.

When GG first started at this day care, she was a year and a half. She continued to go there until Kindergarten and then for one summer after. I give the teachers a lot of credit for preparing her for Kindergarten and also teaching other life lessons. Unfortunately that was not the case once
Little Dude came along. The day care went downhill and I eventually quit my job (I worked there when they attended) and pulled them out.

But I am very glad GG was there and did not grow up solely in our district. This day care was located downtown. GG, being blond haired and blue eyed, was a minority there. She never seemed to notice that she looked different than most of the other kids there. I, as a parent, took great pride in that. This realization further sunk in a year or so ago. GG and I were watching a tv program about the Queen of England. She was having some sort of fancy dinner. Her guest was the King of an African country. My apologies for not remembering which at the moment. The King was dressed in clothes from his country - loud patterns with many, many bright colors. GG asked who "that man" was. Not sure who she was referring to because there was a roomful of people, I asked her who. She said, "That one." Still not sure, I asked, "Do you mean the black man?", wondering if she knew what that meant. Her response... "Which one is that?" When I asked if she meant the man in the colorful outfit, she knew who I was talking about and that was who she was asking about.

It just blows me away that she doesn't see people for what they look like on the outside. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do try to teach my kids too see others for who they are, but sometimes you're not sure if your messages are really sinking in with them.

I'm glad to know that these messages are sticking with my children.

Until next time....

Meet My Babies

Did you ever have one of those days where you want to write a blog post but you have a serious case of writer's block? That's where I am right now. So guess what? I'm going to do what I do best and talk about my kids.

My oldest and most favorite girl, and I'm only saying she's my favorite girl because she is our only girl...

Baby girl
GG was born 8 years ago and what a crazy night that was! Like most new moms about to have a baby, I had no idea what to expect. When would labor start, what would it feel like, when should I go to the hospital - the typical concerns I think. I had a few contractions in the 2 days before I had her. They weren't anything that could be timed or cause any great discomfort so I didn't pay much attention. But I did go home and make sure the hospital bag was ready to go!

I remember very clearly that it was a Sunday night and I was watching Billy Joel on tv. Around midnight I decided to go to bed and finish watching the concert. Shortly after that is when it hit. I knew the pain wasn't bad enough or often enough to call my doctor. But I knew it was the real deal. Around 2:30am I couldn't take it anymore and called my doctor. I was on hold for 20 minutes - not wise on their part! Finally I was told the contractions weren't close enough and I should wait a little bit. I was so uncomfortable that I decided we needed to go anyway. To make a long and painful story short, we arrived at the hospital at 3:30am and GG was born at 3:44am.

School picture
4 years ago is when we added another to our happy little family.

Baby picture
Having done the pregnancy thing already, I thought I was a pro at it. I didn't know when Little Dude would decide to make his entrance, but I did know what it would feel like and when to go to the hospital. With GG not being very patient at making her entrance, I had discussed the possibility of an induction with my doctor. I wasn't crazy about scheduling the birth of my child for no apparent medical reasons, but I did want to grantee my safe arrival at the hospital. The Tuesday after this discussion was my next appointment, when we would discuss the idea a little deeper. Well guess what happened that Tuesday? Yep, Little Dude was ready.

I didn't wait as long as I did with GG. I called Chris, who was already at work, and my mom in case Chris didn't make it home in time. Fortunately he did and we all went to the hospital. We checked in, got the my room, and everything was going smooth. The anaesthesiologist came in my room around 9:30am for my much needed and much wanted drugs. His words... "I'm sorry. It's too late". What?!? Long story short again, we met Little Dude at 9:44am.

Peek-a-BOO
Challenge 5

Challenge #5
Scare the crap out of someone
and catch in on video

Easy-peasy

Ok, not so much

Little Dude scares so easily it's not even funny. I had everything set up to scare the crap out of him. He grabbed a few diggers, sat in front of my computer, and made a movie. I snuck up behind him and, POW! He screamed and ran away. Now here comes the problem - you couldn't hear a darn thing on the replay. I fiddled with the computer. Chris fiddled with the computer. Nothing. I gave up and figured I'd come up with something on Tuesday.

Well, guess what? Tuesday morning I woke up sick as a dog - achy, tired, couldn't talk above a whisper. I finally caved and went to see my doc and it turns out I have strep throat. So much for jumping out and scaring someone by screaming. But I did come up with a plan. Like I said, I couldn't figure out the audio for the life of me. I'm lucky I understand the whole webcam thing! But my plan is still good for a laugh. Check this out...

You love me right? Wasn't that video worth your time?

Anyway, here's the real thing. The kids wanted to get on You Tube and see videos like the one I just made. The only scary movie that I could think was the Michael Jackson movie. You know, the one where Larry King is showing the inside of Neverland and there's a ghost walking across the hallway. And then the crazy bugger of a ghost pops up at the end, too. Well of course I had to get a video of the kids watching THAT!

Until next time....

Is This The Example Being Set For Our Daughters?

So I've been sick the past few days and to be perfectly honest, it has sucked! Thankfully I, along with the rest of my family, don't get majorly sick too often. And like the typical mom, when I am feeling ill, I push on to do what needs to be done regarding the house and the kids. But this time that was not the case. You see, I hate the doctor. I avoid them like the plague. But I had to cave and go this time. It felt like I swallowed a porcupine and it was stuck in my throat. My diagnosis was strep, which did not come as a surprise because I know it's been going around. I would like to know who shared that loveliness with me so I can properly thank them, but anyway...

My doctor, who is just awesome, especially compared to my last one, gave me a prescription. Unfortunately I seem to have an allergy to Augmentin, which meant I couldn't take that and she didn't want to give me Amoxocillian either. Those are the typical things given to treat strep. So was given something else and told to call if it didn't seem to be working. Thank the heavens that it is working. I can finally drink a whole cup of coffee and I can talk. The not being able to talk thing was killing me! And I think because I couldn't drink my coffee, I was extremely tired. It felt great to take naps the past 2 days, but I fell behind on things. There's the typical house stuff that I need to catch up on, but that's an everyday thing I've learned. It feels as if those things are never done! But I also haven't been able to read and comment on blogs I love, or reply to comments either. That last part is something that I am really working on. I really want to make a good effort to have conversations and form bonds with other people. So before I get crack-a-lackin on the things I need to do and catch up on, I wanted to get something off my chest.

Yesterday I read a post from the Mommyologist. She wrote about a bitch model that shared her philosophy on having a healthy pregnancy. To sum it up, this lady said that some women use pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever they want, regardless of if its healthy or not. Thus resulting is blowing up and being a HUGE pregnant lady. I'm not going to deny that I was addicted to Snickers and Pepsi when I was pregnant with GG. When I was pregnant with Little Dude, I could get enough salad and other veggies. So how come I ate healthier the second time around but gained a ton more weight? I gained 50+ pounds with Little Dude, but no where near that with GG. I understand that what this model did during her pregnancy worked for it, but that make other moms who did things differently bad.

And speaking of models, I heard a story on a local radio station this morning. The DJs were talking about Top Model auditions. Now I don't watch this show - never have and have no desire to start, but I found one of the requirements for an audition rather interesting. Obviously they have to think you are pretty, but one requirement is that a woman needs to be 5' 7" or taller. I know that typically models are tall and skinny (too skinny sometimes), but does this mean that if you are not tall and skinny, you aren't beautiful?

Let's look at Barbie and the controversy around her. Society said she was not good for little girls because they would want to grow up and have Barbie's body. I personally never wanted that. I mean, who in their right mind would want to walk around with their feet in that kind of contorted position all the time? Certainly not me! And my Barbies were some busy gals. I certainly didn't want that kind of lifestyle, but maybe that was just my gals. Anyway, dolls now aren't much better. They're loaded up with make-up and too short skirts and halter tops. And let's not even discuss the dolls who come with bathing suits, or lack of!

Why does society dictate what is beautiful? As a mom it is so hard to teach my daughter what is beautiful when what you see out there are dolls and images that can be damn hard to replicate. I want her to feel beautiful and worthy as a person, but then when were out in public all you see are tall, skinny, big breasted women on the covers of magazines. And sorry chicky, that last part does not come naturally in this family.

So who's with me to start a movement that you do not have to be tall, skinny, and flawless to be beautiful?

Until next time...

For anyone who follows me on Twitter from this post, don't be offended if I don't follow back immediately. I promise I will return the follow soon. I am dying sick. So sick that I finally caved and called the doctor. I try to avoid them at all costs. That should tell you how crappy I feel. My hope is that they'll give some good drugs and I can catch up on my blog and Twitter stuff soon.

Until next time...
